Manning Gorge Walk

We left early as we need to cross the river to start the walk. The river is about 50 m wide and there are plastic barrels cut in half to float your gear across and keep it dry while swimming across, or a boat which is rigged for pulling yourself across. We got in at 6.30 and still had to wait for the boat. Pulling it across was not that easy as the system is crude but one of those that can’t be compromised by morons. The walk itself is quite tough as it goes uphill for some time and then over a little ridge and then down across some boulders and then up again. Repeat for 2.5km and then a climb down a rocky slope into the gorge. The reward is stunning. We first saw the huge lake like pool with rocky edges and some sandy banks in between. We walked towards the noise of the falls and as we rounded a rocky outcrop we saw the beautiful water fall and a huge swimming hole. Pure paradise, and yes we enjoyed every minute of it frolicking under the falls like two teenagers. Tough life, but someone has to do it. We were the second couple there and had the place almost to ourselves. It wasn’t long before people started arriving in dribs and drabs but soon after their swim they would all leave and we would be on our own once more for a short while. The walk back was done under some cloud cover but the humidity is up there with that of the wet season. Our shirts were sodden with sweat by the time we got back to the river crossing. This time we swam across pushing our gear in the barrels. It was only about 10.30 and we spent most of the day alongside the river in our deck chairs. Had a lovely curry for dinner alongside the camp fire. Oh and half a bottle of red and a few Aperol’s for ET.
