Left Imintji after a long chat with Letitia from Saldana Bay and headed west. The road was still very wet in patches but not bad. Had a good run to the turn off for Mount Hart. After that it became narrow and as we approached one of the many creeks we came across a road grader in black mud going sideways trying to grade the road ahead. He managed to scrape most of the loose stuff off the top as he approached us and headed up onto the bank. He told us that a road train had got stuck and buggered up the road. We had a narrow slippery exit to the creek with huge tyre holes where the road train had gone off in the rain. I just hoped and prayed that the van and car didn’t slide off the road into one of those because the grader would have had to tow us out. I am now officially sold on the capability of the Maxxis RAZR AT Tyres. They worked almost as well as my muddies did. After covering the 50 k’s of mud, creeks and slippery road we arrived at the green grassed airstrip and Mount Hart Wilderness lodge. First Green grassed camping area we have seen for some time.
Imintji is managed and Mount Hart is owned by Colin (Aus) and Mietsie ( Saffa). They also run a number of 4 wheel drive bus tours across the Kimberley and own and franchise all of the 4wheel drive mega stores in South Africa. ET managed to negotiate to use Peter and Gabby’s booking as an extra night for ourselves and she gave us back the rest of the pre made payment. No loss, yay. Will more than likely spend it in the pub tonight. In order to get a meal at these stations you have to pre order. So we are ordering one fish and chips and one pizza. Night out and off for both of us.
We had a swim in the river alongside the camp ground. Not as good as some of the places we have been but at least it is cold and deep. Don’t like it when you can’t see through the water as freshwater crocs could lurk there. If you stand on one you are in big trouble. Ran the generator for the afternoon to top up the battery which is struggling in the low winter sun. If only solar worked on heat instead of sunlight. We have plenty of tropical heat but the sun is way far north.
In the late afternoon we went to the bar and I watched a footy game on TV while Elaine read her book. Of course we had a few bevies. I spoke to Colin the owner of the place and he agreed to sell me some of his private stock of petrol. As he said, only because you are Zimbabwian. I said no Colin, Capetonian. Dinner was great. Pizza was huge and the fish was King George Whiting from Shark Bay. A very nice evening out. Watched downloaded Netflix when we got back. Camp site has filled up a lot while we were out.
