Broome to Middle Lagoon

Left the camp site in Broome around 10am and headed into town to do some grocery shopping. Then started our drive up the Dampier Peninsula to a place called Middle Lagoon. The road North is now all sealed although in the last two years the wet season has taken it’s toll. There are large areas where you can see the massive volumes of water have simply swept chunks out of the edge of the road. At the turn off the road turned into a sand track so we reduced the tyre pressure to 25psi all around except for the rear of the car. With the lowball weight and all the rest of the weight we left those at 30psi. It was an interesting drive in with the track very deep in places. There were also muddy areas where water was still present from the wet season. Managed to drive around those on the now formed detours through the bush. One bloke who did the detour tore the arm off his electric awning and shredded the awning canvas on a tree branch.

On arrival we drove up to the ridge and found our camp spot on the edge above the beach. Stunning views, even from bed. The sun was setting so we quickly dragged out the chairs, table, champagne and snacks to watch an awesome sunset.

The next day I did some fishing without any luck. We walked up and down the beach, swam a lot and read in the sun. Most of the day it was breezy but at night it was very calm. We had some folks over(Gai and Terry) to enjoy the sunset with us. We had met them in Kununurra before. He was the one who tore the awning arm off his van. We enjoyed it so much we tried to get a further two nights but they were fully booked for the ridge area. So we moved to another spot closer to the other beach where Elaine did plenty of paddle boarding. We also did a long walk to the creek and collected lots of shells. On our last night we enjoyed the sunset with a couple from Manly who were racing around the country from cabin to cabin using their roof top tent in-between. Their names were Dave and ….She had spent some time in Uganda and was English. Dave was Australian. They drove a Landrover Discovery which was nicely fitted out. We ended up talking to them well after they sun had gone down. We then races back to our van as we were previously invited to barbie with a few of our neighbours. We were still in our swimmers and they were about to start cooking. The temperature had really dropped to around 16 degrees and we were freezing. Chucked on some longs and a jumper, grabbed a bottle of Red wine and headed to the fire. ET quickly showered, changed, made the rest of the dinner and joined us at the fire where I started to barbie the meat. However in-between all of this I managed to spill a full glass of wine across the kitchen counter and into the stove and drawers. Fastest I have ever cleaned up a wine spill. All worked out and we had a lovely evening of wine, dinner and chats. One bloke even looked like Paul Hogan and I was tempted to call him Hoags. Four of them were from NSW and one woman grew up in a street very close to where we live. The third couple were from Gladstone in North Queensland.
