Interesting rest area. It is so popular that we ended up staying in an area that had been cleared with a bulldozer alongside the rest area. Caught up with some other old blokes travelling on their own. Next morning we hit the road. As we pulled onto the road I could see a car in the far distance heading towards me. I had plenty of time and steadily picked up speed and was doing around 90kph when he came past me towing a van. He must have been doing 120kph and he swung in across my path and I would have clipped his van and caused it to roll had I not swerved slightly off the road. He was not prepared to slow down slightly but rather put his kids and wife’s lives at risk for the sake of proving a point which can only be that he was going faster than me. He continued this action with a van which was ahead of us. I was preparing for a confrontation if I ever caught up with him. What an idiot. We stopped in at the Daly Waters Pub for toasted sandwiches and coffee. As we arrived I spotted the van that had cut us off while I was turning around to park. By the time I had walked to where I saw him he was gone. Probably just as well as he might be a druggie bogan and they are so unpredictable.
Refuelled at the road house further down the Stuart highway and then turned east onto the Carpentaria Highway. The road to Cape Crawford road is single lane sealed with gravel edges for passing oncoming vehicles. A big day in the saddle. It was a relief to pull into Cape Crawford and set up camp. Prices have gone up since we were here last time. After setting up camp I checked the van and found one of the wheel bearings had come slightly loose. Jacked up and removed that wheel. Adjusted the bearing tension and fitted the wheel. All dirt road tomorrow and don’t want to start that with loose wheel bearings. Caught up with a fellow Legend caravan owner who had just come the way we were going. He told me it was really rough and his wife called it the worst road she had been on. Not really encouraging news. Had the local emu inspecting my engine while I was cleaning the air filter. Its always a bit scary when they come real close.
