Well there was nothing for it but to head out towards Normanton on the Carpentaria Highway. The road is actually an awesome drive with many river crossings and a real outback feel. There is lots of free camping besides the creeks but there is always the ever present croc danger. It is however well over due for grading and I don’t know why they don’t do it. It wasn’t as bad as the Kalumburu road but it comes a good second for bad corrugations. Speeds with the van were between 40 and 70kph for safe travelling. We eventually pulled up at Robinson River in the mid afternoon and found a spot high up on a bank. We were the only ones on the eastern side of the river until a supported motor cycle group arrived and set up camp about 50 m from us. A few of them wandered over to us to see if we had satellite tv as they wanted to watch the state of origin. Sorry chaps, no such luck. Had a lovely fire and cooked sausages and mushrooms in foil with butter and garlic. Very tired from the concentration required on rough roads, so we turned in as soon as the fire died.
