Cobbold Gorge to Einasleig

Packed up by 10am and filled the water tank as we are bush camping tonight. Drove the dirt road back to Forsayth and had a coffee at the pub. Quick catch up on messages and calls and then on the most beautiful narrow road through the Caterpillar Ranges. The road is 90% sealed and just a lovely slow drive as it wends it’s way through the hills. Arrived at Einasleigh and stopped at the pub for info and a cold one. It’s the only place in town besides the three other houses. After the beer we found out where the camping was and drove back out of town and across the bridge to the other side of the gorge. As we got to the railway line the historic Savannah Lander train pulled into the station from Cairns. Would have loved to see it crossing the wooden rail bridge.

We found a spot to put our van and made our way into Copperfield Gorge. The gorge was originally a Lava Tube which collapsed and has since e been subjected to erosion over a very long time. The town was a copper mining town and all that remains is the pub. As in many instances, when the mining stops, people pick up their houses and move somewhere else. We had a swim in the freezing water and then walked around the gorge and took some pictures. Elaine swam again at the waterfall which I wasn’t that keen on as there were hundreds of mad Archer Fish.

As evening fell we walked into town and had dinner at the hotel. Walking back was a mission as it was pitch black and we could see nothing. All we had was our phones for torches. Not nearly good enough in the bush. Of course we had really good torches and head lamps in the van…….
