Port Douglas-Daintree-Cape Tribulation-Mossman (8 days)

Day 1-We drove into town for an early morning coffee and pastry before catching up with Gabby and Peter. For some reason when the four of us get together we end up talking ourselves into pastries, lunch dinner drinks etc. Not sure what it is but that’s how it ends up.

Peter and I walked around town and had another coffee while Elaine and Gabby did some shopping. We eventually all met up for a beer at the Hemingway’s Brewery. Decided not to have lunch there but move next door to Lure for lunch which was nice. Finally had some salt and pepper squid.

By the time we were finished it was cocktail hour so the girls moved next door to Barbados cocktail bar and Peter and I went for a walk amongst the boats at the Marina. By the time we got back the cocktails had been decided. The cocktail of the day of course was the one that Gabby had. Creme Brûlée Espresso Martini. Wow…..After relaxing while the sun set we eventually went our seperate ways as Peter and Gabby are currently staying out of town at Wonga Beach.Crash and burn, no dinner necessary.

Day 2-The next morning we drove out to Wonga Beach and met up with Peter and Gabby before heading out to the Daintree River and Daintree. Had a walk around the area and the little tourist shops before heading to the tea room in the forest which was closed. Damn, no tea and scones for us. Onward up to Cape Tribulation through the thick rain forests of the Cape. We had a lovely lunch at Thornton Beach before heading up to Cape Tribulation Beach  to walk it off. The last time we were in this area was in 2000 when we did a very adventurous trip up the old TelegraphRoad to the tip of Cape York and Thursday Island. About as far North as you can go in OZ. The kids were all very young. I have included an old picture which was sent to us by Colin Bebbington. A big day out with lots of driving.

Day 3- We booked for breakfast at St Crispins to catch up with our good travelling friends Jeff and Lynne who have arrived in Port Douglas. We were going to introduce them to Peter and Gabby but they phoned and told us that Jeff had contracted Covid and was isolating in their van.So once more the four of us are eating out. Brekkie was great and followed up by a walk around town and time on the beach.

Day4- Market day. Dropped Elaine at the markets and went looking for bits for van. Met up with Peter and Gabby in town after they had done their market walk and we spent the day on the beach.

Day5- We rode our bikes into town and then along the beach today. Caught up with Lynne and Jeff who were doing a beach walk. Kept a safe distance of course. We made arrangements to meet up for sundowners at the point and headed our seperate ways. Went and had a look through some show homes to see the layouts which were very nice.Sunset turned out not to be sunset as the weather was rather overcast. We still had a lovely evening with Peter, Gabby, and Lynne.

Day6- Did a bike ride on the beach and then hired a couple of beach chairs and an umbrella to spend the day on the beach. Gabby and Peter joined us a little later and we spent the day reading, swimming, sleeping and sun tanning on the beach. Walked into town for lunch and then back on to the beach.

Day7- Today is Gabby’s birthday so we had lunch arrangements with them at The Tin Shed. First we went for a bike ride on the beach and a coffee in town. Then out to lunch to celebrate. After lunch wed went back to camp for a nap and then into town for evening drinkies. A good day of celebrations.

Day8- Another ride along the beach in the morning stopping next to a resort to download movies on their 5G reception. In the afternoon we drove to Mossman and bought some meat at the local butcher which turned out to be way too expensive. It’s always good but we can no longer justify it. We also went for our 4th covid vax at the local hospital as there are no queues. A quick visit to the Mossman Gorge but it was way too late for the tour. Back to camp to start packing up as we leave tomorrow.
