We left McLaren Vale and the heat hoping for some cool breezes on the York Peninsula of South Australia. Our first stop for the day was Port Wakefield for lunch. Had to find a tree to park under as it was 40 deg. Sat by the water watching the kids swimming and then back into the air-conditioning of the car for some relief.
We are on our way to Ardrossan for a few days. After setting up camp we walked around the town and down to the jetty which is impressively long like many in the area. They were all originally built to accommodate ships for the transport of minerals or cattle or grain. Most have been restored and are now tourist attractions. While we were down there the guys were pulling in lots of blue swimmer crabs for the pots. I think they were being a bit greedy but I guess they need a lot for a decent feed. The area is well known for swimmer crabs. In all the camp sites around here they have fish cleaning facilities as so many people come down with their boats and spend all their time fishing. The wind tends to blow a lot down here and it reminds us of Cape Town only a hell of a lot hotter.
The next day after a great sunrise from the jetty, we drove down to a place called Edithburgh for a look see. It was very hot again so we were better off in the car. On the way we came across a wide load that was going like the clappers. They had two pilot cars, one of them a police car, way out front moving traffic off the road. The truck was travelling at 90kph and one time it hit 100kph and we know this because we were driving behind them. See the video. Stopped at Port Vincent which was a nice spot but we were almost delirious from the heat so after a short visit we headed on to Stansbury, where there was lots of Street art and a water tower covered in art. ET was in her element. Then onward to Edithburgh where there was an amazing bronze of a famous Clydesdale Horse. A quick look for the seals at their jetty and then off to the sea pool for a much needed swim. Spent some time there trying to bring our core temperatures down. Turning back North we headed back stopping at Black Point where the locals have built all their houses right down to the beaches preventing most people from getting through. Back at our van, aircon on, we collapsed.
